Public libraries allow people to check out up to five books with a library card.
Including my youngest child--who got his card immediately after his first birthday--our family reads 25 new books a week.
Among the pile of books that my wife and children recently checked out, a book called ‘Chinese History as a Children’s Story – Qin Shi Huang, the First Emperor’ caught my attention. I picked it up because I was curious to see how they paraphrased complicated historical accounts into a children’s story.

Probably more than half of the 7 billion population know ‘Qin Shi Huang.’ Most of the Chinese, who take up the greatest portion of the world’s population, must know him since he is the very person who built the Great Wall--the only man made structure visible from the moon. The Great Wall was actually the product of innocent people who struggled to work, even to the point of even losing their lives. Additionally, Qin Shi Huang is also famous for searching in numerous places in order to find the elixir plant, a mysterious and powerful medicine.

This was described in greater detail in the book. The emperor was deceived by a fake ascetic, who claimed to have met the god of eternal youth, and, by giving the the fake ascetic several ships loaded with all kinds of treasures, he had him bring the god. The emperor was deceived by his repeated lies the lies of another fake ascetic, and ended up dissipating a significant amount of the national treasury. Becoming resented by the people, he ultimately came to ruin.

At that moment, a thought flashed through my mind. I thought, ‘Even the emperor struggled so much to meet the divine being but couldn’t meet him. However, I have met him, so how lucky I am! I have not invested much either, so I cannot be compared to Qin Shi Huang.’

When I shared this thought with my wife, she said, “Then I should compare myself to Tutankhamen.”

For reference, Tutankhamen had his dead body mummified and kept in a pyramid, a gigantic tomb, so that his spirit may rest.

It makes me think that we are a happy family that has no need to envy any king in the world.
