Holy Communion as a Testamentary* Ceremony

Testamentary* (Translator’s note: Testamentary means of, relating to, or bequeathed or appointed through a will.)

A will - the very last words that you leave behind with earnestness/sincerity.

A singer in Korea who recently passed away said, “This is a letter of stories and also a will that one man leaves….a man who is afraid that he might just leave without saying everything he wants to say to his beloved people. If I were to be born again,
I  would want to be your husband, your son, your mom and your brother…..I would want to keep my relationships in any way I could." The words that he left have touched many people’s hearts.

Dr. Hwang Soo Gwan who was famous for ‘Shinbaram*’ left his will on an internet website as follows

(Translator’s note: Shinbaram means excitement and it was his nickname and also the theme of his lectures as well.)

"I will donate all my organs to underprivileged people. I hope my body will be of help the research of future Medical School students."

Professor Hwang was unaware of how and where he would die, and had thus long ago written his will on a small piece of paper which he always kept in. He is known for having lived a truly righteous life as a medical school professor.

The first commander of Korean troops in Vietnam, General Chae Myung Shin left in his will, "Do not bury me in the General Cemetery, but bury me near where my beloved soldiers are buried.”  He was engaged in the Korean War and the Vietnam War. He said he had experienced numerous crises in which God helped save his life. Through his will, we can tell that he was grateful to God, knew how to humble himself, and had a deep affection towards the soldiers with whom he shared his life.

Ahn Jung Geun who died for the independence of the nation left the following as his will.

"After I die, bury my bones next to Harbin Park* and when we reclaim our nation,  please move my remains back to my home country. Even in heaven, I will strive for the independence of our nation. When the sound of Korea’s Independence is heard in heaven, I will definitely dance while shouting hurray”

(Translator’s note: Harbin Park was located in China.)

Our hearts are in pain at the reality of the fact that we have not fulfilled his final will because we have been unable to find his remains until this day.

It was something he wanted to fulfill even after he went to heaven, and because he earnestly wanted it even in his final moments of life, he left it as his will. He believed that it was something worthy of  fulfilling not only during his entire lifetime, but even at the time of his death.

The Meaning of Holy Communion of this Time Period

Communion is a ceremony that Jesus himself established. Jesus chose the perilous path of crucifixion on the cross for the atonement of all the sins of the world. He washed his disciples’ feet and had supper with them right before he was captured. It is the testamentary ceremony that he left behind it.

His final will was, "Treat others as you want to be treated," which is the so-called Golden Rule. and he even showed the example of washing his disciples’ feet as both their teacher and the body of ‘the Lord and Savior.’ He held the Holy Communion by sharing bread and wine with his disciples in the hopes that they would become his body and establish the world of deep love.

The Holy Communion is founded upon both the memory of Christ’s ministry in the past, as well as the hope of future, that is, the advent and the rapture . It is an event that signifies our current relationship with Christ while also signifying that we will dwell with Him eternally in Heaven in the future. It was also an event in which The Trinity God gave revelations to each individual. It is ‘the Holy Communion of this time period’ that is more significant. I offer a deep prayer of determination that we will become ‘His’ body and fulfill eternal love.
