What is a ukulele?

The ukulele is a traditional Hawaiian [string] instrument. Portuguese immigrants played Braguinha, a traditional Portuguese guitar-like instrument, and the Hawaiian natives were very impressed by their hands movements that were like jumping fleas. They used the “Koa” tree to make this instrument and called it “ukulele”.

Uku means “flea” in the Hawaiian language and lele means “jumping”. Ukulele means “a jumping flea”. In other words, uku is “a gift” or “pay” and lele means “to come”. It means “a gift from somewhere”. In other words, it has the meaning of a gift from Portugal to Hawaii.
