I witnessed the resurrection and the ascension. Then I became freed.

Longing for the disciples to have courage and freedom…

I witnessed the resurrection and the ascension.

Then I became freed.

“Go! I will always be with you until the ends of the earth.”

The movie: Resurrection (2016)

A movie called ‘Resurrection’ (Risen, directed by Kevin Reynolds) has been released. It is an interesting movie about Jesus’ resurrection and the ascension depicted from a third person point of view by a Roman soldier who killed Jesus.

In the movie, the Roman military tribune (Actor: Joseph Fiennes) was searching for Jesus’ dead body, not because he believed in the resurrection but because he believed that Jesus’ body must have been hidden somewhere. In the process of his investigation, he met Jesus who had resurrected. In the end, there was a twist where he asked Jesus if his resurrection was true and if he could bet his life on it.

The disciples were in despair after losing their beloved teacher, but after meeting Jesus who had resurrected, they were not able to hide their smile even in situations where they were being tortured by the Romans.

The conviction and firm hope that arose from witnessing the resurrection and the ascension changed the disciples completely. It transformed them into great disciples who did not fear anything.

“The seed is sown already. You (Romans) won’t be able to do anything about it anymore.”

“When I witnessed this (resurrection), how could I go back to my old life (as a fisherman)?”

- Excerpts from the movie spoken by the disciples

Simple and Clear Commission

The fact that the Holy Son absolutely came to the earth in body, died on the cross for us, ushered in the great history of victory with His resurrection and ascension...

And the fact that we have loved the Heavens with all our heart, will, and life, loved our brothers and sisters as if they were a part of our own bodies, and then went to the eternal Heaven that the Holy Son prepared…

There was a clear message that relayed ‘all this’ which was what the disciples saw and heard.

And there was also the great commision that the Holy Son proclaimed, which was to deliver this ‘message’ to the ends of the earth.

Because of this simple and clear commission, the disciples’ lives changed.

The disciples’ lives that were great and beautiful

The disciples’ lives really overflowed with hope, thanksgiving, and joy, and were in a state of complete freedom, one in which all their fears and terrors were gone. That state was maintained even until they had to face death for fulfilling their mission.

After that, because of those who could not see Jesus’ resurrection and ascension and because of those who could not be convinced, new laws and rules were made alongside a doctrine riddled with complications. People who were not able to witness that time would probably need logical inference, and people who could not be with Jesus in person would probably need an excuse to testify. Since people could not simply assume what happened, maybe that’s why their doctrine became a bit verbose. But for the disciples who eye-witnessed the resurrection and the ascension, wouldn’t you agree that all of these concerns probably weren’t a big deal to them?

Laozi* once said, “A way of life that can be described with words is not a way of life.”

Following this logic, then Jesus’ disciples probably reached the level of living ‘the true way of life,’ an ‘outstanding, remarkable way of life’.

They couldn’t explain it with words, but because they witnessed it in person, they were able to understand. And because of that, they were convinced and were able to free themselves from all kinds of disputes and hardships. I can imagine how great and beautiful their lives were.

(*Translator’s note: Laozi was an ancient Chinese philosopher and writer. He is known as the founder of the philosophy, Taoism, and is referred to as a deity in Taoism and traditional Chinese religions.)

Those who have witnessed and experienced the Holy Son’s history of victory (the resurrection and the ascension) have to be more courageous, more thankful, and praise with joy, and go on the path of history limitlessly, freely. The last Word the Holy Son proclaimed as He was ascending still resounds in my ears.

“Go!! I will be with you always until the ends of the earth.”
